Abebe Defends Muyiwa Obasanjo's NY Property
BY IDOWU AJANAKU

THE family of the First Lady, Chief Stella Obasanjo, at the weekend rose in defence of Olumuyiwa Obasanjo, who was reported to have bought a house worth N78 million in Brooklyn, New York.

John Abebe, Stella's elder brother, said Olumuyiwa's transaction became public news as a way to get at President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Abebe said the property in question is a block of flats which was acquired by the younger Obasanjo early this year at a sum of £250,000 through a loan obtained from a US bank, preparatory to his wedding.

"This is a boy who has three degrees and works in a law firm, who is struggling just like any other child," Abebe said. "The money he used to buy the house has nothing to do with government money. It is a loan and the record is there for everybody to see."

Abebe said Olumuyiwa was granted the loan based on his earning, which is about $220, 500 dollars per year. "This is what is obtained in the western world," he said. "Banks can grant you loan five times the amount you earn to enable you buy a house. Many people are doing it. We did it in our days, so I don't see anything strange with what Olumuyiwa has done.

"This is a boy who has been living in United States for the past 13 years. He often comes to Nigeria. He is not involved in any business deal."

Abebe faulted allegations that Olumuyiwa Obasanjo was one of those importing fuel into the country. "That is absolutely untrue," he said. "You can check your records at the NNPC or any agency of the Federal Government."

He, however, said he was the one involved in oil business which he said dated back to years before Obasanjo came to power.

Abebe stated that though another son of the President, Olugbenga Obasanjo, recently said the house was owned by Olumuyiwa, there was no crack in the first family of Nigeria. Olugbenga was initially fingered as the owner of the house.

"I know nothing about the house. It is not my house. I am not the Olu mentioned in the story. I am Olugbenga and the person mentioned is Olumuyiwa, Stella's son," Olugbenga Obasanjo said.
