sanctioned over joke on Obasanjo

TWO
presenters on South African radio station, Highveld Stereo, were last
week suspended for seven days without pay for "irresponsible" remarks about
President Olusegun Obasanjo during President Thabo Mbeki’s inauguration late
last month.

According to the online publication
www.nigeriamasterweb.com, the radio station’s Manager, Mr. Mr. Ravi Naidoo,
said the presenters, Messrs Revin John and Lloyd de Bruin were taken off air
"with immediate effect" and without pay for one week.
Naidoo said he viewed the remarks about
Obasanjo "in a very serious light". "The suspension of both presenters was made
after an internal enquiry," he said. John and De Bruin occupy the 19:00 to 22:00
shot, Mondays to Fridays on the station.
The 94.7 Highveld Stereo is a
regional South African radio which has come a long way in the past few years and
is popular in the bubbling city of Johannesburg.
The two presenters have also apologised on
air for the remarks.
"We hereby unresevedly apologise for
making these irresponsible comments," the two presenters said in a statement
read on air.
"They were spontaneous and not thought out. No malice was
intended. We hereby also unreservedly apologise to the Nigerian President and
his government," they added.
